People are hard for me.

It’s been a long time since I’ve attempted to paint people. Portraits have always been a bit daunting for me, and humans are all the more daunting because getting the skin tone *just right* and the emotion and so forth is always really difficult for me. Somehow, non-human animals are much easier. Maybe it’s the fuzz. I dunno.

Anyway, two years ago my lovely lady made the decision to move across the country to be with me. This wasn’t an easy decision for her, as she is extremely close to her family and leaving Texas meant seeing them far less often. Throw a pandemic into the mix, and we haven’t had a face-to-face with her family in nearly a year. (sigh)

For the holidays, I wanted to bring a little bit of her HOME home to our house, so I conspired with her mother (who is the coolest lady around) to get some family photos that I could use as a source material to do a family portrait. The photo was a casual shot, and the lighting was a bit tricky, but I feel pretty good about my first people portrait in about 30 years!
