I decided to work on the Save the Bees design next, as it has gotten a lot of positive reaction. It’s cute, not quite so overtly political, and the colors are terrific.
Since the Black Lives Matter movement was a primary motivator in my starting on this project (which morphed into a major new direction in my work/life balance!) I decided this should be the next set that I hand-paint for sale. As with all of the Protest Hex project, giving back is important. A portion of the profits from this will go to a local “bail fund” to support BLM protestors.
This design probably has the most feedback and interest, so I started with the Pride Magic hexefus design. I am doing two sets of these to begin.
When I created my first set of hand-painted hex signs (for my own deck) I used a 1/8″ thick birch board from WoodPeckers Crafts. While this thickness is very nice, I found it difficult to find a good way to hang it. The stretchy plate holders I planned to use caused bowing, it was too thin to drill into, and the lightness caused some blowing in the wind.
